How to Rank on Google
Without Spending on Ads

A practical, no-fluff SEO playbook for Indian D2C fashion, jewellery, and lifestyle brands — written from real store experience.

68% of all online experiences begin with a search engine Most of those clicks never make it past page one
₹0 cost per click once you rank organically vs. ₹12–₹80 per click on Google Ads for fashion keywords
higher conversion rate — organic vs. paid traffic Customers who find you via SEO trust you more

Most D2C brands in India start the same way: run some Meta ads, get some sales, realise the cost keeps climbing, and wonder why they’re still completely invisible on Google.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth — paid ads rent you traffic. SEO builds you an asset. A well-optimised Shopify store for a fashion or jewellery brand can generate hundreds of organic sessions per day — with no ongoing spend — once you’ve done the foundational work.

This guide covers exactly what that foundational work looks like. No theoretical SEO jargon. Just the specific steps that have worked for Indian D2C brands we’ve built and maintained at Dorec.

Strategy 01

Find the Keywords Your Customers Actually Use

The single biggest SEO mistake Indian D2C brands make is targeting keywords that describe their brand rather than keywords their customers type into Google. Your customers don’t search for “premium handloom fashion” — they search for “cotton kurta for office women” or “silver jewellery under 2000”.

The keyword research framework for D2C fashion and jewellery is simple: map every product category to three types of intent.

Keyword Example Intent Where to Target Competition
buy cotton kurti online India Buy Collection page High — worth it
handloom saree for wedding Buy Product / Collection Medium — target now
how to style a palazzo set Info Blog post Low — easy win
silver jewellery brands in Delhi Local About / Blog Low — easy win
oxidised jewellery under 500 Buy Collection page Medium — target now

Dorec tip: Start with Google’s own autocomplete and “People also ask” for your top 5 product categories. These are real searches from real Indian customers — and they’re free to discover.

Strategy 02

Your Collection Pages Are Your SEO Powerhouses

Most Shopify stores waste their collection pages. They have a name, a grid of products, and nothing else. Google has almost no information to work with — so it ranks you for nothing.

Collection pages should be the highest-priority SEO pages on your store. They target high-volume, high-intent buying keywords and they’re the most likely pages to rank on page one for competitive searches.

What most stores have

– Collection name as H1 (“Kurtis”)

– Zero description text

– Default meta title from Shopify

– No internal links

– Generic image alt text or none

What Dorec builds instead

– Keyword-rich H1 (“Cotton Kurtis for Women – Shop Online”)

– 150–200 word SEO description above or below grid

– Custom meta title + description (under 60 / 160 chars)

– Internal links to related collections

– Descriptive alt text on every product image

One of our clients — a Jaipur-based ethnic wear brand — went from zero page-one rankings to ranking for 14 commercial keywords simply by rewriting their 8 main collection pages with this structure. No link building. No technical changes. Just better on-page content.

Strategy 03

Product Pages: Stop Copying the Manufacturer Description

Duplicate content is one of the most common SEO problems in D2C fashion. When multiple brands sell similar products and use identical or near-identical descriptions, Google struggles to decide who to rank — and often ranks none of them well.

Every product description on your store should be original, specific, and written for both the customer and Google. Here’s the structure that works:

Opening sentence with the primary keyword naturally embedded (“This hand-block printed cotton kurta…”)

Fabric and craft story — this is where Indian brands have a unique advantage. Write it.

Occasion and styling context (“pairs well with palazzo pants for a festive look”)

Care instructions in bullet form — these help with long-tail searches

A descriptive product title (not “Blue Kurta” — try “Hand-Block Printed Indigo Cotton Kurta – Jaipur”)

Image alt text describing the product, colour, and material

Warning: AI-generated product descriptions that are copy-pasted across hundreds of SKUs are being actively devalued by Google’s Helpful Content updates. Use AI as a drafting tool — but edit, personalise, and add real detail before publishing.

Strategy 04

The Blog Strategy That Actually Drives Buyers, Not Just Readers

Most D2C brands that blog make the same mistake: they write about their brand. Launches, behind-the-scenes, founder stories. These posts get zero organic traffic because nobody is searching for them.

An SEO-driven blog answers the questions your potential customers are already asking on Google — and then leads them naturally to your products.

The rule: Every blog post must target a specific search query, and every blog post must link to at least two product or collection pages on your store. No post should exist purely for brand storytelling.

Here’s a practical content calendar structure for a fashion brand publishing 2 posts per month:

Month 1–2 · Foundation

Category & Occasion Posts

· “Best cotton kurtis for office wear 2026”

· “How to style ethnic wear for a wedding guest”

· “Silver jewellery gifting guide under ₹3000”

· “Palazzo pants vs. straight kurta — which suits you?”

Month 3–4 · Authority

Craft & Education Posts

· “What is Mul Cotton? Everything you need to know”

· “How to identify genuine handloom fabric”

· “Difference between oxidised and antique silver jewellery”

· “Block printing vs. digital print — a buyer’s guide”

Month 5–6 · Conversions

Comparison & Intent Posts

· “Top 10 ethnic wear brands in India 2026”

· “Where to buy handloom sarees online India”

· “Best online jewellery stores for Indian brides”

· “ShopMulmul vs. other cotton brands — honest review”

Strategy 05

Technical SEO: The Foundation Most Brands Skip

Good content on a slow, technically broken store is a waste. Google’s ranking algorithm considers Core Web Vitals — page speed, layout stability, and responsiveness — as direct ranking signals. Before you invest time in content, fix the technical foundation.

Technical SEO checklist

– Mobile page load under 3 seconds

– No broken links (check monthly)

– XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console

– Canonical tags set on all product variants

– HTTPS enabled on entire store

– Schema markup on product pages (price, availability, reviews)

– No duplicate meta titles across pages

– Images compressed and in WebP format

Shopify-specific issues to fix

– Remove unused apps — every app adds JS weight

– Set canonical on /products/ to avoid /collections/ duplication

– Avoid duplicate content from product tags

– Disable pagination for thin collections

– Set 301 redirects for any deleted or renamed pages

– Use Shopify’s built-in sitemap.xml (don’t override it)

– Test structured data with Google’s Rich Results Test

– Check Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console monthly

“SEO is not a campaign — it’s infrastructure. The brands that start building it in year one are the ones that don’t need to double their ad budget in year three.”

4.2× Avg. organic traffic growth in 6 months
₹0 Cost per organic visitor once ranked
14+ Page-one rankings in 90 days (on-page only)
3 mo Typical time to first ranking improvements

Watch Out

6 SEO Mistakes Indian D2C Brands Keep Making

01
Targeting brand keywords instead of product keywords Ranking for your brand name is easy and automatic. Ranking for “cotton kurta women online” is where the traffic — and revenue — actually lives.
02
Launching the store with no SEO setup at all Google starts crawling your store from day one. Launching without meta titles, descriptions, and a sitemap means weeks of wasted crawl budget.
03
Thin collection pages with no descriptive text A page with 12 product cards and no written content gives Google nothing to index. Every collection needs at least 100–150 words of contextual, keyword-relevant copy.
04
Blogging without a keyword strategy Writing about your brand, your team, and your values is great for Instagram. On Google, nobody is searching for it. Blog content must target actual search queries to generate organic traffic.
05
Ignoring image SEO entirely Fashion and jewellery stores have hundreds of images with filenames like “IMG_4821.jpg” and no alt text. These are wasted opportunities for both Google Images traffic and page-level relevance signals.
06
Expecting results in 30 days and giving up SEO is a 3–6 month investment before meaningful traffic appears. The brands that win are the ones that treat it as infrastructure, not a campaign.
