Shopify Speed Optimization: Why Your Fashion Store Is Losing Sales to Slow Load Times

Here’s something most fashion brands don’t want to hear: your beautiful, high-res product photography might be actively costing you sales. Not because the photos are bad — but because they’re making your store slow. And slow stores bleed customers silently, every single day.

How to Check Your Store’s Speed

Start with Google PageSpeed Insights (free). Enter your store URL and you’ll get a score from 0–100 for mobile and desktop, along with specific issues to fix. Most unoptimised Shopify fashion stores score between 20–45 on mobile. A score above 70 is a reasonable target.

Also check your Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console — these are the metrics Google actually uses for ranking. Focus on LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) and FID (First Input Delay).

Typical unoptimised fashion store (mobile)Score: ~25
After basic optimisationScore: ~55
After full performance overhaulScore: ~75+

The 8 Biggest Speed Killers in Fashion Shopify Stores

🖼️
Uncompressed hero and product images High impact
Fashion stores often upload 5–10MB raw images. These should be under 200KB each after compression and conversion to WebP format. This single fix can halve your load time.
📦
Too many installed Shopify apps High impact
Every app adds JavaScript to your store — even apps you’ve disabled. A typical fashion store has 15–20 apps; 8–10 is usually achievable. Audit and uninstall anything you’re not actively using.
🎨
Heavy premium theme with unused features High impact
Popular themes like Impulse and Prestige are feature-rich but bloated. They load code for sections you’ve never activated. Custom or stripped-down themes perform significantly better.
📹
Autoplay video on the homepage High impact
Autoplay video is a conversion killer on mobile. Use a static image with a play button instead, and only load the video when clicked.
🔤
Multiple Google Fonts loaded Medium impact
Each font family is a separate HTTP request. Limit yourself to 2 font families, preload them in the theme’s head section, and use font-display: swap.
💬
Third-party chat widgets and popups Medium impact
Live chat widgets (Tidio, Intercom, Freshchat) add 300–500ms of load time. Load them after page interaction — not on initial page load.
📊
Multiple tracking pixels without a tag manager Medium impact
Facebook Pixel, Google Analytics, Hotjar, Klaviyo — run all of these through Google Tag Manager instead of adding individual scripts to your theme.

No lazy loading on product images Medium impact
Images below the fold should load only when the user scrolls to them. Shopify 2.0 themes support this natively — older themes need a fix.

The Maintenance Mindset

Speed isn’t a one-time fix. Every new app you install, every new section you add, every new pixel you set up has a performance cost. The brands with consistently fast stores treat performance as an ongoing discipline, not a launch checklist item.

At Dorec, our Shopify maintenance plans include quarterly performance audits — so your store stays fast as your business grows, not just at launch.
