10 Shopify Mistakes Indian D2C Fashion Brands Make (And How to Fix Them)

After building and auditing Shopify stores for dozens of Indian fashion brands — from luxury ethnic wear to celebrity-led streetwear — we’ve seen the same mistakes come up again and again. These aren’t obscure technical errors. They’re fundamental problems that cost real money, every day.

Here are the 10 most common — and how to fix each one.

01
Designing for desktop when your customers are on mobile
Why it hurtsOver 80% of Indian fashion shoppers browse and buy on mobile. A store that looks great on desktop but has tiny text, cramped buttons, and hard-to-navigate menus on phone is haemorrhaging conversions.
The fixDesign mobile-first. Test every change on an actual Android mid-range device, not just Chrome DevTools. Make CTAs thumb-friendly (minimum 44px tap target). Reduce the number of items in your mobile menu.
02
No clear return and exchange policy on the product page
Why it hurtsUncertainty about returns is the #1 reason Indian online shoppers abandon fashion purchases. If your policy is buried in the footer, it’s not working.
The fixAdd a one-line return policy (“Easy 15-day returns”) directly on the product page, above the add-to-cart button. Link it to the full policy for those who want details.
03
Product descriptions that are just a list of specs
Why it hurtsListing “100% pure silk, hand-embroidered, dry clean only” tells the buyer nothing that makes them feel the product. Fashion is emotional — your copy needs to match.
The fixWrite for occasion and emotion. “Perfect for a festive mehendi ceremony — this lightweight mulmul kurta pairs beautifully with statement jhumkas.” Specs come after the story, not instead of it.
04
No size guide on product pages
Why it hurtsSize uncertainty drives up both cart abandonment and returns. If a buyer can’t figure out their size in 10 seconds, they’ll close the tab.
The fixBuild an inline expandable size guide on every product page — not a separate page. Include both Indian and standard measurements. Add a note on how the garment fits (slim, relaxed, oversized).
05
Using too many Shopify apps
Why it hurtsEvery app adds code to your store. 20 apps can easily add 4–5 seconds to your load time, directly reducing your SEO ranking and conversion rate.
The fixAudit your app list quarterly. Ask: “Is this app actively contributing to revenue?” If you’re not sure, disable it for a week and measure. Aim for under 10 active apps.
06
Ignoring post-purchase email flows
Why it hurtsAcquiring a new customer costs 5–7x more than retaining an existing one. Most fashion brands spend everything on acquisition ads and ignore retention completely.
The fixSet up at minimum: a post-purchase thank you with a styling guide, a 10-day review request, and a 30-day winback offer. Klaviyo or Omnisend make this straightforward.
07
No product photography on model with different skin tones
Why it hurtsIndian buyers want to see how a product looks on someone who looks like them. Single-model photography limits your relatability and suppresses conversion across a broad customer base.
The fixInvest in photography with models across skin tones and body types where possible. Even flat-lay with fabric close-ups is better than a single model shot that doesn’t represent your audience.
08
No SEO on collection pages
Why it hurtsCollection pages (e.g., “Kurta Sets,” “Bridal Lehengas”) have massive search potential — but most Shopify stores leave their title tags, meta descriptions, and collection descriptions empty or generic.
The fixWrite a unique 150-word description for each major collection, include the primary keyword naturally, and set a custom meta title and description for every collection page.
09
No COD option
Why it hurtsA significant portion of Indian online shoppers — especially in tier 2 and 3 cities — still prefer cash on delivery. Not offering it means losing a large segment of potential customers.
The fixEnable COD through your payment gateway or Shopify’s built-in COD option. You can restrict it to certain pin codes or order values to manage risk.
10
Launching and walking away
Why it hurtsA Shopify store is not a one-time project. Shopify updates, app conflicts, broken links, declining page speed, and new conversion opportunities all require ongoing attention.
The fixBudget for ongoing Shopify maintenance — monthly updates, performance checks, and at least one CRO experiment per quarter. Brands that grow consistently treat their store like a product, not a poster.

The Common Thread

Almost every mistake on this list comes down to the same root cause: treating the website as a design project rather than a business tool. Beautiful stores that don’t convert are expensive decoration. The goal is always sales — and every decision on your Shopify store should serve that goal.
